Question
Hi I have a 8m old male blue staffie & a 9m old female blue staffie. the bitch has come in season should i part the two would he be sexually acktive. thanks

Answer
Hi Clinton:

Yes, I would definitely keep the two separated. Although he's still quite young, sexual maturity occurs on average around 6 to 8 months of age so it's very likely he'll instinctively attempt to mate once her scent is strong enough for his hormones to kick in. Be especially wary during the estrus (fertile) portion of her cycle, which will usually begin around day 9 or 10 from the initial onset of the cycle & lasts for about a week to 10 days. It can last longer though so be sure to keep them separated for longer than you think necessary to be on the safe side. All too often I've seen dogs impregnated when their owners were certain they were well beyond estrus! Better to err on the side of caution. I hope this helps.
