Question

Saint
Hello there and thanks for this wonderful site. Ok so I have a 2 year old Saint Bernard we planed on breeding her this spring but her heat cylce came in November/December. We where not actually sure when she became in heat. Our neighbors told us that they had saw our male dog mounting her all day. So we seperated them for the 2 weeks after she wasnt allowed outside un-supervised and to our knowledge that was the only time they had mounted. So fast foward to now, the last month her nipples have become noticelby larger and we suspected she was pregnant. She would eat more and became very protective of her food but she seemed like she was loseing weight. I switched her food to a high active dog food and she started feeling out more. At the begining of last week her belly started to get bigger so I uped her food intake again to 10 cups a day, she would eat every bit of it. On Sunday her nipples started getting droppy but her stomache was hard and she seemed like every day she stomache grows more and more, but yesterday when I got home it seemed like it may have gotten smaller I know thats werid but we checked her out and nothing was wrong she was ready to play fatch. She goes to the vet tomorrow to get confirmed if she is pregnant or not. So my question is what would explain the weight loss?

Answer
Hi KC

A false pregnancy has the same signs of a real one without the end result.

Gestation is 64 days, so I'm thinking if she came in the first of December. 31 days in December, plus the 31 of January...would make her seriously over due.

If you do plan on having her bred, do her a favor and keep her on quality kibble or better yet a raw diet.  Upping her food especially a high active one, will encourage the pups to grow to large in and can cause complications in whelp.

Good luck.
