howling after mating

My dog is howling after mating and I know it's normal but r there any tricks to calm him? It's at night and we r trying to sleep! Also his penis is knotting but he just can't seem to make the tie with his mate, he is definitely all about her but just can't get it in the right spot. By his penis knotting does that mean it was inside her but then slipped out before the tie could happen? Thanks

Actually, he should pass out after mating.  

His penis should knot when he's inside the female, and her muscles contract to keep him in place causing the tie.  It sounds like he's just overly excited.

Is he shorter than the female?  You may need to do an assist.  By placing the female across your lap, bring him around to the business end. You may have to guide him into and clamp him tight until the tie can happen.

Try moving him to another area of the house and cover his crate.  You can also leave a radio on to drowned him out.
