Question
Hello,

I don't breed dogs but my friend has a 14 month old Rottweiler. He came from a show/working dog line but she doesn't want to show him. He is going to be neutered in 4 months but her Husbands friend has a Pure Bred 3 year old Female Rottweieler and they think they would have cute puppies. He has never done this before (actually mated) Is he old enough to breed her? She said he "acts" like a male, lifting his leg and trying to hump her 3 year old spayed female Pit Bull.

Thanks, I will pass any info onto her (she doesn't have a computer)

Answer
He most likely is able to breed and impregnate a female dog. 14 months is awfully young to breed any dog however. I suggest to everyone to wait until the dog is atleast 1 1/2 years old first, I'd prefer two years old before breeding. Any dog that is to be bred needs to have his/her health tests done before breeding. And most tests can't be done until the dog is about 2 years old. I know that people who breed just for pet puppies say that they don't need to do the tests, that they're only breeding for pets. But breeders have to protect themselves, their puppies, and their puppy buyers. There is such a thing as a puppy lemmon law, and if you're selling sick puppies, then you could find yourself in court. Tell you friend that his best bet would be to wait until the dog can have all of his tests done before breeding, and only breed to dogs that have had theirs done. (By health tests I mean hips OFA'd, eyes, heart, ect. Anything that plagues that perticular breed needs to be checked.)
