Question
I have a two year old male schnauzer that we were going to stud out. I have a lady who has brought us her female and we are going to try and breed them. She has been in heat for about a week and we have had her for two days.  The first day he was all over her and trying to mate.  Now its just like she is suppose to be here and he isn't trying.  What should we do and since this is both of their firsts will that mater?

Answer
Hi Andrea:

It shouldn't matter that this is the first mating for both dogs -- instinct normally takes over. It sounds as if she may not yet actually be in estrus, the fertile portion of the heat cycle. This usually occurs approximately around day 9 or 10 from the initial onset of the cycle & is characterized by the vaginal discharge becoming lighter in flow & color, becoming more of a light pink to straw color. You might try separating them for a few brief periods of time to see if he shows any renewed interest once reintroduced (absence makes the heart grow fonder?). However, more than likely once she's fully in estrus he'll respond instinctively since she'll be not only emitting the scent which will speak volumes to him but she should also encourage him by flagging & teasing him. I'm including a few links you may find helpful.
