Question

Lola and Peepers -
I raise Chihuahuas. I have a 2 year old Chihuahua that will have puppies due Oct. 10. I bought Lola in June, 2008 and she was in Heat when I bought her. I put my male out for 3 weeks just to make sure he didn't get her. About 5:00 a.m. in the morning I heard her scream out and found her with my Male.  I don't know how she came back in Heat so soon. Have you ever heard of this, coming in within 3 months.  She will be 1 year old Nov. 10 which is approximately 3 weeks and 3 days difference from when her puppies will be due. Do you think she will be ok since she will almost be 1 year old when she has her puppies. I would have had them separated if I had of had any idea she was in heat, they gave me no clue what so ever. She was 6 months old in the picture I am sending her picture and she weights between 4 and 5 pounds. She is longhaired. I am sending you another picture of my short hair chihuahua and she is 2 years old. They are about the same size. I will be in town until Friday and will be out of town until next Saturday.
Thank you for your help.

Answer
Hi Judy

Could be that your new female was experiencing a false heat or a split heat when you brought her home?

If her thyroid (which is very common) is out of kilter, that will affect her heat cycles too.

Small dogs mature quicker so you may be okay.

Finally, did you actually see a tie? If she has an infection and is discharging, a male can become confused thinking it's time to breed, when it's not.

Good luck
