QUESTION: I just recently started breeding high quality AKC Pomeranians. I purchased a champion bloodline Blue male but he is 8 years old. I plan to use him 3 times, neuter him and keep him as a pet. But my question is this: The two females I am breeding him to now are in estrus (standing heat) and what I have started doing is breeding him once daily to each female. Is this a long enough period in between breeding to let his sperm build back up??  Thanks in advance! I've looked everywhere for this info and can't find it!!

ANSWER: Hi Brooke

So you're breeding him twice a day?

Even though males produce new semen every time, that may be too much for him, it's exhausting but some males can handle it no problem.

What you may want to consider is breeding him one day to one female and the next day to the other female.    This gives everyone a break and lets his semen count go back up.

Good luck

QUESTION: I actually meant i was breeding him to one girl one day and the other the next. From your answer, I guess this is okay. I just wanted to make sure this would be okay for him at 8 years old. I know when people are trying to have a baby, they say to try every other day to let the man's sperm count come back up. Is this true for dogs too, or do they just have plenty to go round? And would his age be a factor? It may seem I'm kind of asking the same question twice... but just trying to clear things up!! thanks!

Answer
Sorry Brooke -- it's the end of the day for me, so asking questions twice helps :-)

The schedule you are own is good.  His age can factor into his viability but remember he can produce a million sperm a go round.  It's the quality and not quantity you're after as males determine the sex and females determine the numbers of pups.
