Chihuahua Discharge after whelping

Question
Hi.  Thanks for being here to help.

I adopted a female Chihuahua on August 7.  On August 10th she had a litter of 4 puppies.  One puppy didn't make it, one was very small but with the help of our vet has been thriving.  Mom has been doing great until yesterday.  We noticed yesterday that she was keeping her ears down and that she seemed off. This morning when I woke, I fed her Iams puppy food ( Her normal breakfast ).  Within an hour she started vomiting ridiculous amounts.  She vomited about 11 times and was keeping her ears down and shivering.

I took her to the vet and he gave her an injection of antibiotic and something to make her stop vomiting.  Centrine and Penicillin.  He also sent me home with Centrine.2mg tabs and pet-cal 60.

Yesterday I noticed discharge from her vulva and didn't think anything about it.  Today at the vet she had more discharge and just now she was sitting next to me on the couch and when she got up there was a dime sized spot of blood where she was.  I told the vet about this and he didn't seem concerned.  When she had the puppies, I counted all the sac's and they all seemed intact.  The vet palpated her abdomen today and didn't seem concerned.

Since she got home from the vet about 5 hours ago, she seems to have perked up some, her ears are back up and she is again barking to alert me of any sound that happens in the house.

Should I be concerned or have I done everything I can and I just need to wait and see how she is?  I never noticed any discharge from her after the puppies until today.

Thanks for your time.

Answer
Hi Kirsten

Did your vet give her oxytocin?   This will help clean her out.

She's also been home a short time, she may still be adjusting to you and her environment.

You may also want to consider changing her food.  A quality food like Orjin or Natural Balance will help.

Food plays a large part, feeding her smaller amounts over the course of the day, adding yogurt or cottage cheese will help her slow down her eating.  If you've only had her a short time you may not not her previous feeding habits.

Good luck
