chihuahua and pregnancy

Question
I've read some horrifying stories on chi's getting pregnant, is it safe for my little one, she's 18 months, it's her 2nd heat, and she's 5 lbs.

Answer
Chihuahuas can have a difficult time whelping -- in short, due to their size, often a large puppy can necessitate a C-section. Depending on your dog's lineage & that of the male, if over-sized puppies run in their genes you could experience a problem. I would urge you to contact your vet to discuss when to possibly have an ultrasound performed and, even more importantly, have an X-ray done at around 50+ days gestation to get an idea of the puppies' size. If your vet feels she'll have a difficult time in whelping vaginally, he'll be in a better position to judge whether or not to plan a C-section. At least your little girl is at a good age so hopefully all will be fine. However, please contact your vet to see what tests are recommended.
