Bleeding after pups

Question
QUESTION: Hi Penny, my 4 and a half year old dog (Twinkie) gave birth to four live pups on Nov 8th.  She is still bleeding not heavy but still never the less.  Three of the pups are gone.  I kept one.  She is not feeding but is still swollen at the nipples.  And is also not the same dog she was.  I feel like something is wrong, but I have gone thru some financial hardship and can not afford to take her to a vet with big bills.  Do u have any advice for me.  I want to take to the vet but I do not have one in my area that will let me make payment on a bill. If God forbid there is one.

Please help
Tamara

ANSWER: Hi Tamara.  I'm sorry to hear of your financial hardships - these are bad times for a lot of people.

Some dogs continue to "spot" for a couple of months after giving birth, so that in it self is not too alarming.

You mentioned that the puppies were born on November 8th, that would mean that the puppies would not be 8 weeks old until January 8th.  However, you also wrote that 3 of them are gone.  How old were the puppies when they were weaned?

When you wrote that her nipples are swollen, did you also mean that she still has milk, or is it just the nipples?

Some dogs do go through a "change" for a period after giving birth, but as her hormone level decreases, she should return to normal.

Good luck, and please keep in touch.

Sincerely,

QUESTION: Ur answer helped me a lot because I was so worried abou that spotting. I thought I was going to have to put her down.  It is not green it is red so I guess that is good.  I do not know if she still has milk, that is y I let the pups go so quick is because she was not feeding them and I ended up feeding them.  They still wanted to feed but she was distance and I felt she was not feeding.  They just left this past weekend, I know it was early but I figured she was not feeding and them going to a home that they could get more love.

I hope she comes back to me cause I miss my Twinkie.
should I give her something to bring back her levels or will they come back on there own?
Thank you so much Tamara and I will keep in touch.
Thank u

Answer
Hi Tamara.  Your Tinkie might be a little depressed and distracted because she doesn't understand what happened to her puppies.

Most of the things I would recommend giving her would require a prescription from a veterinarian, however; I am adding a link to a website that has dog supplements that might help.  The link is as follows   http://www.jbpet.com/WellTabs,1028.html

Good luck and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions.

Sincerely,
