Question
Hi Joyce
Our girl is a 4 year old Black Lab and this will be her first litter.  She has been bleeding now for 12 days.  We brought her to the stud last night and she would not stand.  She spent the first 20 minutes marking their yard while the stud followed intently sniffing every stop.  He tried several times to mount and she was more interested in playing.  Did we miss her standing heat or does it start when the bleeding stops? Thanks

Answer
Hi Martin

Typically the blood starts to thin out and become a pinkish color.

If she won't stand, put her on a leash and hold her steady.  Allow the male to mount her and to get the job done.

It could be that she's still early.  Anywhere from day 9 to 19 is a good guess.

Good luck.
