outside tie occurred during mating

Question

this is the cc we used
I took my 2 yr old chinese crested to be bred a good distance on her second day of standing heat.   She flirted an played with the stud for two hours; then flagged an allowed him to mate.   They did this constant for about a hour; we left them.  We came back aprox. 2 hrs later and found the male with his penis swollen and tied (outside the female)  she was wet over her back and in the rear; and the ground was as well and the entire fencing.    Some splattered areas of blood were also seen but not on the female nor the male penis.  No pus was noticed.  Both had been vet tested for everything and were in perfect health.   Later a small scratch on the males penis was found to be the blood problem; though they did not fuss at all they were very sweet towards one another.   They continued to play and the male to mount constant with her flaggin but no tie occurred inside her; only again on the outside.   Could this be a problem or should i continue to prepare for possible preganancy?   What are the signs she might exhibit for pregnancy and should i get her tested for anything else since blood was obviously around also.   Thanks

Answer
Hi. First I have to say thanks for sending me that picture. She is adorable. Dogs can become pregnant even with an outside tie, but only if the male had ejaculated any at all inside of the female. Most people want a regular tie when breeding. I can't say either way for sure if your girl is definitely pregnant, it depends on if the male got any of his guys to the right place. One sign that some breeders look for as a positive pregnancy sign is if the vulva stays larger than it was before heat. Besides that, a real pregnancy and a false pregnancy have the same symptoms, so it's hard to tell early into the pregnany. I would treat her as if she is pregnant until proven otherwise. Good luck! P.S. if you decide to breed her again, I wouldn't leave her and the male alone together. They can seriously hurt each other on accident. If the blood came from the male, than I wouldn't worry too much about your girl. if she starts to act off in any way, get her to the vet and have some blood work done. Let me know how it turns out please.;-)
