Question
Hi Denise,

I have a 6 yr old yorkie that I have been wanted to breed since she was
young. I got too worried then that breeding would alter her personality, but
decided I'm ready now, but afraid that I waited too long? She was born Dec.
30th, 2001 and her next heat will be in March. She is in excellent health,
other than being slightly overweight (7.5lbs). The male we would breed her
with is 4.5lbs.

Do you think she is too old to be bred? Are the complications (and risk of her
death) very high at this age?

Thanks you!

Answer
Breeding a dog for the first time over the age of three is not recommended. Most, but not all, may not make good mothers & I'd hate for you to go through a heart-breaking situation. With her age the risk of complications are greater & personally, if she were my dog, I wouldn't risk it. If you're truly interested in breeding maybe consider getting her a companion female puppy & breed her once she's 18 months to two years of age. Also, you might ask your vet for his opinion on this.
