Quality of stud dog breedings

Question
I'd like further information on your Answer
Males generate sperm on a regular, consistent basis; however, I wouldn't breed him more frequently than every other day per dog (the norm is three matings) and I'd limit his sessions to no more frequently than twice monthly. This will allow enough time for him to regenerate quality sperm. If he's mating too frequently he may produce lower quality sperm which may result in birth defects and/or negative pregnancies.
I'd like to know more, I've been told by a major breeder that a dog can breed one bitch one week and 2 more bitches the following week without problem. It looks like your answer disagrees with this. Would the second week bitches really be at risk for small litters or more birth defects?

Answer
Hi Sara:

I think I meant no more than twice a week vs twice a month - just my typing getting ahead of my thinking! Two to three matings per week should be sufficient to produce quality sperm. I sincerely apologize for the confusion!

Hello again Sara:

I apologize, I guess I didn't read your question thoroughly enough. A lot of this really depends on the health of the male & quality of his sperm. Even if bred every other day, whether it be to the same bitch or multiple bitches, as long as his sperm quality is high it shouldn't pose a problem. Probably the best way to know for sure would be to contact a reproductive veterinary specialist & have his sperm analyzed. Plus the vet may be able to offer additional information on the best course of action.

By the way, thank you SO much for the low feedback scores. Considering I'm donating MY time for free one would think people would appreciate the effort, free advice, etc, & if there's a communication error, be given an opportunity to clarify instead of just rating me poorly. Good luck with your breeding endeavors. If you should need any questions answered in future, try a qualified veterinarian, who will likely charge a minimum of an office visit or a pay site.
