My boxer is 58 days pregnant

Question
QUESTION: Hello. My boxer is 58 days pregnant. This will be her second litter, and she is about half the size she was last time. I'm concerned about that. Is this normal? Can she carry higher like in her rib cage area? She has been having a clear/white discharge for about 6 days now, and her vulva is swelled. I'm worried that maybe something is wrong because she isn't as big as before...

Thank you in advance for your information.
Nelly

ANSWER: Hi Nelly

A larger chested breed like the Boxer can carry higher.

The symptoms all sound normal -- she could also have a singleton or small litter.

You have only a few more days to wait, but if you have concerns, an x-ray can give you more detail.

Good luck

QUESTION: Thank you! That makes me feel better. She had 7 in her last litter, so she probably does have a much smaller litter this time.

ANSWER: You're welcome.  Remember a female is born with all the eggs she is ever going to produce.  Her body lets them go at different rates.

QUESTION: Ok.

Another quick question: She was only mated twice...Dec 6 and Dec 7. What day do I use for her due date? What would be your estimate for that date?

Answer
Her date has everything to do with ovulation and less to do with the date of breeding.

I would take the second date just to be contrary but gestation is from date when the egg has been fertilized.  An egg takes 7 days to mature and sperm can live up to 72 hours.  So there is a days at play.  Second week of February is a safe bet.
