female cycle

Question
Bella is 8 months old and had her first cycle about a month and a half ago.  Her female area really is large and sticks out and she's kind of behaving like she might be in heat again.  It's our first dog so I'm very 'green' about all this.  I'm planning on getting her spade as soon as I safely can.  HELP!

Answer
Hi Jo

Sometimes it takes a few weeks or months to have her vulva go back to "normal", depending on the breed, sometimes it never goes back.

A heat cycle last about 21 days.  It's important to remember that it continues AFTER the bleeding occurs, and that's when you are in the most danger of your female becoming pregnant.

It's usually 60 days after a female comes into heat that you can have her spayed.

Good luck.
