Breeding to soon?

Question
Hi there. Our female Jack Russell, Sage had puppies on November 16, 2007. We wanted to skip her next heat cycle and breed again but our male dog Milo got smart and figured out how to get out of his crate while we were gone. It has only been about six months since she last gave birth, which was her first litter. Is this to soon and will she and her puppies be okay if we go through with it? I really don't want to abort the puppies but I don't want to put Sage in danger either. Please help!!!

Answer
Hi Jessica. It depends on a few things. It depends on mom's condition, how well she whelped and took care of the pups, and how healthy the pups were. If she had an easy time of it all, and took care of the pups, then she should be fine. Some breeders do what's called back to back breeding. They usually either have the female fixed after the second litter, or give her a full year off before letting her have another one. Talk to your vet, and see what he thinks. If she's in top condition and didn't have problems the first time, then she may be ok this time. Good luck!
