Studding behaviors?

Question
I was wondering about my dogs studding behaviors. This is his first attempt at studding with a female in heat. She started her heat around August 6th, 2009 and I brought my stud up with her the second day and both dogs were reactive, but she didn't seem to be open enough for him to penetrate her. I then took him back up on the 8th and once again they were both very interested in each other, this time I left him at the bitch's house. The bitches owner said she watched them the majority of the night and they didn't seem to have done anything. When my stud came home the next morning he was exhausted and starved for meat which he ate alot of which is unusual. He's also been very protective over the bitch. But since he's been involved in this studding process, he's been going outside his boundaries and whinning at the door constantly which is completely not the norm for him. I was wondering if this could be part of the studding process?

Answer
Hi. What day of the heat cycle is she on? It may be too early. Most people try on days 10 and 12, or on days 12 and 14. She may just be too early yet for it to happen. the male's behavior is normal for a male used as stud, be prepared for more of it. You'll have to watch him closely now, especially since he's going outside his boundries like you say. Male's can smell female's in heat for a long way off, so he may act this way from now on. Studding a male can change his personality some, you just have to get use to it, and make sure you keep him safe. Good luck!
