weird heat cycle

Question
My golden seems to be having a strange heat cycle, I have been checking her often since my other female has been smelling her a lot. My male wanted to breed her this past Wed the 19th and she was not swollen or bleeding much it looks as if she had just started that day. I checked her 5 days before this and she was not in heat, now which should be her day 6 into heat she looks totally dried up, she was dripping blood 4 days before this and she was a little swollen but not accepting to breed. She is a golden so there seems to be no way we could miss her bleeding for 3 weeks, what do you think is going on. I can't really go by my male since he will try to breed anyone at anytime in heat or not. Is it possible to have a dog not ovulate at all and have such a weird cycle where she doesn't bleed enough to have it all over her hair.

Answer
Hi Tara

Typically a female won't bleed for three weeks. The bleeding can last 3, 4 or up to 10 days. With very clean females, you may not notice at all or she may be a light bleeder.   If she was bleeding at all indicates that she was in fact, in season.

So next time, when your male wants to breed her, let him.  If she's not ready she won't stand.

What I would do is make sure she is maintained on an excellent quality dog food and supplement her with vitamins and oils (the omega's work best).  This may give her enough of a kick so that her system comes into play.  You didn't mention her age or how many heats she has had in the past.
