Question
I have a 5 year old boxer who I have bred. This will be her 3rd litter. I counted the days and figured her whelping date as 3/10. Yesterday I checked her and she had 1 pup. Last litter she had 9. I had a field trip for my child so left. She had no problems in the past and no sign of complications.  When I returned that afternoon the one pup had died and she had no more.  She was upset when I took the dead pup but otherwise no other symptoms. She was running around like my usual girl.  I hate to take her to the vet for nothing. I don't see any signs of a problem.  Is there any thing I can check to reassure myself I am making the right decision?

Answer
Hi Cynthia. I'm sorry for your loss. It's not unheard of for a dog to only have one pup. If she's not panting, and not having contractions still, then there's a good possibility that There's nothing left inside of her. You can try to feel to see if something's still inside of her. Place both hands on her sides, starting close to her ribs. You may feel lumps if there's anything there. However, the uterus may feel odd because she just gave birth. My best advice would be to take her in for a check up just to be on the safe side. If something's left in there, it make make her really sick, and even kill her. Sometimes, the little extra money spent is worth our peice of mind. I hope everything is ok.
