Question
we have had ella since she was 8 wk. old now we know for sure she is deaf paid 700.00 for her  breeder said she would swap dogs but we cant part with ella. we have a 2 1/2 yr. old granddaughter  that lives with us and her an ella cant be parted.my question is what do you suggest the breeder should do.how should she make good on this situation. i dont think you can breed a deaf dog or sell one.

Answer
Hi Bambi

My question is why is the dog deaf?  Was it born deaf or did something happen to it to cause the deafness, like an injury, trapped water, etc.

Regardless, the dog should not be bred period. The problem should be sorted out between you and your breeder. However if you did not have a contract, it's a tough lesson learned.  You can check with your local laws to see if you can do anything legally.

In this situation, personally as a breeder,  I would ask for the dog back and either replace it or refund the money.

Now with that being said, living with a deaf dog doesn't have to be tragic or traumatic. There are some excellent actives and organization like www.deafdogs.org that will provide you with insight and assistance.

Good luck.
