Answer
On average, the first heat will occur around 6 to 8 months of age & thereafter approximately every 6 months. The initial signs include swelling of the vulva & a bright red bloody discharge. Around day 9 or 10 she will enter into the estrus or fertile portion of the cycle. At this point, the discharge will become lighter in flow & color, often a pale pink to straw color. This is the time to be sure to keep her away from all unaltered males as they will be attracted to her by scent & will want to mate by instinct; also, she will encourage them to do so. The entire heat cycle lasts approximately 3 weeks total but, as stated above, the bleeding should only last for about 2 weeks. Keep in mind that all dogs vary somewhat in this so it's entirely possible she may differ from the averages.
