Cavalier King Charles Spaniel- not going into heat

Question
I have a 3 and 1/2 year old Cavalier from my own breeding. She had her first heat at 18 months of age and it was not typical. She had her second heat at 2 and 1/2 years and it was alittle more normal and I planned on breeding her. The male was somewhat interested but we didn't get a tie. Now at 3 and 1/2 years I am still waiting for her to go into heat. Have you had any experience with this? Do you think she has had silent heats?I was thinking of taking her to a vet in the area who specializes in reproduction to get some tests. should I just wait it out alittle longer?
Thanks

Answer
Hi Lora

When a female has a sporadic heat, I would have her tested.  It could be her thyroid, not enough natural/outside light or her reproduction tract could be scarred.

On a site note, Cavalierhealth.org is a great website for Cavalier owners and breeders who may have found this typical in your breed.

Good luck
