Question
QUESTION: I have two German Shepherd dogs and was wondering what age should they be able to breed at?

ANSWER: Hi Jamie

German Shepherds are prone to cryporchidism (one testie) and very common in the breed. So before you do anything you want to make sure you male has both before you even consider breeding.

The female should have at least 2 heats.  That gives her time to develop and mature.  GSD are one of my favorite breeds and I've owned many, if it was me doing the breeding, I would test their hips before breeding.

Good luck.

QUESTION: Thanks for responding. Just wondering if there are any other common things to watch for in GSD? I am aware of Bloat, but anything else I should be concerned about?

Answer
To name just a few...

Hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and other joint and skeletal problems, Pancreatitis, Toxic Gut, bloat and numerous other gastro-intestinal maladies, Seizures,
Congenital problems such as cardiac anomalies, megesophagous, etc., etc., etc.

Selective, responsible breeding will help bring back a healthier GSD.
