Yorkie Breeeding Age - Too Old?!?

Question
I have a 6 yr old yorkie that I have been wanted to breed since she was
young. I got too worried then that breeding would alter her personality, but
decided I'm ready now, but afraid that I waited too long? She was born Dec.
30th, 2001 and her next heat will be in March. She is in excellent health,
other than being slightly overweight (7.5lbs). The male we would breed her
with is 4.5lbs.

Do you think she is too old to be bred? Are the complications (and risk of her
death) very high at this age?

Answer
Hi. There are a lot of breeders that won't breed a female for the first time after the age of three, some wait until the dog is a little older. Breeders worry that breeding at a later age will result in more complications. It's really a personal decision. I would take her to the vet and have her checked out really well, make sure that she doesn't have a health condition that may cause problems whelping. As for the dog dying, there's a risk each and every time you breed a dog that this can happen. The only thing that you can do is to make sure tht she's in great condition, is kept fit during pregnancy, and she gets to the vet at the first sign of trouble. This is with any dog. Like I said, it's a personal decision, no right or wrong here. I'd just get her in for a complete check up before breeding her. If the vet thinks that she's good to go, then you can decide. Good luck!
