Yorkshire Terrier Breeding Age

Question
HI,

I have a 6 yr old yorkie that I have been wanted to breed since she was
young. I got too worried then that breeding would alter her personality, but
decided I'm ready now, but afraid that I waited too long? She was born Dec.
30th, 2001 and her next heat will be in March. She is in excellent health,
other than being slightly overweight (7.5lbs). The male we would breed her
with is 4.5lbs.

Do you think she is too old to be bred? Are the complications (and risk of her
death) very high at this age?

Answer
Hi Marion

The older the female, the older the eggs.  So you my just have a singleton or small litter.  I do think 6 is getting up in age, for breeding and their personalities do change, sometimes slightly, sometimes more drastic.

There is risk at any age when breeding regardless, however since you have time before her heat I would start her on a exercise and diet program.  Nothing hardcore, walking, high quality kibble or raw, vitamins and fish oils.

The more overweight a female is, the harder time she'll have in whelp.  An active and healthy female's muscles are toned and she may have an easier time delivering.

Good luck
