Question

Bruce
We have Bruce who is 1 year old, he's a handsome boy and has the perfect Boxer personality, he has five generation pedigree, with a few champions thrown in too.  We are just wondering, if we wanted to put him up for stud what age would we do this and how would we go about doing it?

Answer
Hi Rachel. I would wait until he's about 2 years of age. That way, he'll be done growing so you'll know what his faults and virtues are. This will let you figure out what females would be best for him. Two years of age is also when you can have his health tests done. There are a lot of really nice male dogs up for stud, so you have to get his health testing done to attract bitch owners. You also don't want to produce sick puppies. After getting those done, then you can advertise. You can do this on-line, there are some great sites that will list your boy. You can talk to your vet and see if he'll recommend him for you, or let you put a flyer up. One way to educate the public is to put a notice in the paper. Say something like "AKC brindle Boxer for stud to approved females. Has had his hips OFA, thyroid checked, heart tested, DM tested." Something like that. You'll be suprised at how many calls you may get asking what these health tests are. Perfect chance to let people know. The Boxer has many health problems, so it's important to test for them. Good luck!
