Pregnant Boxer

Question
My female Boxer is pregnant and I'm not sure when she and the male hooked up. Truthfully, I don't even know when she actually went int heat. We had planned to breed her and were watching for signs of heat, but she never showed any.
Anyway, she is definately pregnant as confirmed by a pregnancy test last week with our vet. She hasn't showed signs of nesting, but she has been very clingy towards me and doesnt want to leave my side. Her vulva has swollen some this week, her teets feel fuller, yesterday she had some mucousy discharge and her temp this AM was 99.5 rectally. I'm not feeling any puppy movement on palpation of the abdomen, and she pants all the time even when she isn't pregnant.
Can you give me some type of idea as to when we might deliver? Not having a definative EDD is driving the L&D nurse in me crazy!!

Answer
Hi Bridgette

So here's the deal.   You are going to get crazier before you see pups.

Gestation being 64 days, timing is everything.  Because you can't be certain of the day all you can go is the signs.   Problem is mucus discharge can happen up to 2 weeks prior to whelp or 2 days.   Panting is a sign of overheating, excitement and labor.   Nesting is the big one but that happens a few days before pups too.   Finally the only thing left is lack of appetite.  Usually that comes on 24 hours before pups show.

With a large breed dog like a Boxer, they can carry their pups closer to their chest so palpations can be difficult.

Sorry I couldn't have a better answer, all you can do is boil water ... for tea and settle down with a good book.

Good luck!
