Male dog after mating

Question
Hi,  I have 2 beagles, one male and one female.  She has been in heat and they have been mating.  Is it normal for the male to get upset when he isn't around her?  All night last night he was in his crate crying and did not go to sleep and the only time he stops crying is when he's with her.  This never ever happened until they mated.  She is still in heat now.  Is he going to stop doing that once she's not in heat anymore? or will he do it until she has the puppies?  I'm just very confused, we've never had the stud before so I don't know how they act once the female isn't there anymore.  I just don't know what's wrong with him :-(

Answer
Hi Danielle:

Your male is behaving perfectly normal. Often a male housed with a female in heat won't eat, sleep or do many of the normal things. He's entirely focused on her & mating. More than likely, once she's out of estrus (the fertile portion of the cycle & the only time she'll allow mating) he will return to normal. On average estrus lasts about 5 days but the time varies from dog to dog.
