Question
I HAVE A FEMALE YORKIE THAT IS READY TO BREED. SHE IS MOVING HER TAIL TO THE SIDE AND WAITING FOR MY MALE TO DO SOMETHING BUT HE DOES NOT SEEM TO KNOW WHAT TO DO. HE IS A YEAR OLD AND SHOULD BE READY TO THIS I WOULD THINK. MY FEMALE IS 2 YEARS OLD. WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP HIM UNDERSTAND WHAT TO DO??? ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREAT.
THANK YOU

Answer
A lot of male aren't too sure what to do the first time they're bred. And sometimes, a good male knows when to breed and the time isn't right. Some females will flag and stand even when they're not ready to conceive. Some males need longer to mature than others. I would try to leave your female baby gated in your kitchen for a day. The male will be able to see her, smell her, but can't get to her. Another thing you can try is to use a teaser male. Block the dog off that you're wanting to breed, and let him see the female with another male. The trick to this is that you can't actually let your female and the teaser male breed. You didn't say if he was trying to mount her or not. If he is, and is just doing it at the wrong place, gently nudge the female around to where he is correctly mounting her, and he'll get it sooner or later. Some dogs also just don't like a crowd!
