QuestionMy jack russell terrier is expecting in December and since I live in a rather remote area I thought it might be a good idea to have some puppy formula on hand in case I need it. The mother is getting really big and I'm thinking she may have more puppies than she can feed. I found Hartz milk replacement for kittens at the grocery store. It is a powdered form. I could not find any for puppies. I just want to know if it is basically the same thing. Can I use it for puppies? If I do have to help the mom feed her pups, I will alternate pups so they all have breast milk and supplement.
Thank you.
AnswerHartz is not a product name that I use personally. Not to say it's not a good product, just one that I choose not use. There are some excellent brands out there, but in your neck of the woods that could be an issue.
A goats milk / liver (just the juice) is a good mixture but you need the right size feeding tube to supplement the pups with. It takes a steady hand and nerves of steel to tube feed newborns.
You best option is to make sure your female is eating a HIGH quality kibble as her caloric requirements increase when she's nursing. If she loses weight she will fail to produce milk. Supplement with canned or cooked meat and/or cottage cheese. You want to make sure you female is receiving adequate calcium during nursing. So you may want to include a vitamin / mineral supplement. If your female is tense and requires extra energy, add three tablespoons of vegetable oil for each pound of dry dog food and vitamin B supplements if her milk supply stays low to marginal.
Rotating the pups every 30 minutes is a good idea too. You can keep half the litter with mom and the other half in a portable whelping box.
Good luck.
