abandoning puppy

Question
my Jack Russell pups are now 5 days old. One is very large and one is very small. The mother sometimes tries to take the small one away and then sometimes she is fine with it. It needs some help latching on and staying on because the other pup tends to knock it off or the mother knocks it off when she cleans it. We are also feeding it by hand hoping it will get stronger and healthier so the mother will want it all the time. Do you have any advice on how often to feed the pup and what exactly should I do if she keeps taking it away?

Answer
A puppy his age needs to be bottle fed atleast every 3 hours. He'll also need to be pooped, and burped with each feeding. If he's having so much difficulty eating, I'd just go ahead and bottle feed him. If mom will let him stay with her, then you just need to feed it. If she pushes him away from the rest, then he'll need to be kept separate and warm. You can use a simple small box with a towel or blanket. I use a two liter bottle filled with warm water, with the blanket wrapped around it. Make sure the box is big enough so the pup can move away from the bottle if it gets too hot. Some people use heat lamps and such. What I described is good in case of an emergency, in the middle of the night, until you can get something better set up for him. If I can be of anymore help, let me know.
