Question
QUESTION: I have a long haired miniature male and a
short hair miniature female dachshund.  She is two and we would like her to have pups.  Would pups from this pair still be purebred or is the long/short hair difference a problem?

ANSWER: Hi Laura

Which registry to you register with?

The coat lengths on the pups are going to be varied.  And yes they will still be as pure as their parents, grand parents and great grand parents, etc (on either side).

QUESTION: AKC registered.  Is it true that the short hair and long hair mini dachshunds could even end up with a wire haired pup?  I am very pleased with your answer.  We really want our male to be the sire.

Answer
AKC recognize both the standard and miniature size.  They come in three different coat varieties smooth, wire haired or long haired.

You really need to know your dogs lines for at least 3 generations on both side (6 is even better) to determine the percentage or chance that their coat or the color.

Good luck
