Question
My 5 year old chocolate lab is on her 15 day of heat. I want to breed her this time cause she's never been bred before. The male we've chosen is 16 mos old and is a first timer too. We tried breeding at the 12 and 14 day heat days but she wants NOTHING to do with him. We tried holding her, elevating her business end and everything but he couldn't get in. He's taller than her by a few inches is why we tried the elevation thing. She's not swollen enough for him to find. What did we do wrong? Have we missed her fertile time or is she not there yet?? HELP PLEASE!

Answer
Hi Marissa

It's okay if he's a little taller, it can work to his advantage.

If she's moving around, have someone hold her firmly.  When he starts pumping, guide him in, (do not grab it but place your hand underneath his penis).  Hold him in place until the lock occurs.

The only way to tell for certain if you missed her ovulation is to do a progesterone test.

If this doesn't work try A.I.
