Question
we just got back from the vet this morning our pug has just started labor we know it can be anywhere from 1 to 24 hrs before we start full labor she is having 6 to 7 pups is what our vet saw in the X-ray and ultra sound and she told us that the pups are small enough for her to deliver. my partner is nervous because i can't get out of going to work and he has never delivered puppies before we have the vets number and i am only 15 min away is there anything he needs to know other than what the vet has told him?

Answer
Congratulations....puppies are wonderful. It must be a full moon, because I'm delivering pups today too!

It's important to keep the dam hydrated, make sure she has fresh water. Include ice cubes and hand feed them to her (she'll enjoy that).  Keep fresh rags on hand to clean any pups.  A small space heater will help keep the pups warm.

Do you have a whelping box or a quiet corner where the pups will be born?  Once the pups start coming, the rule of thumb is "one pup an hour."

Is this the females first litter?  Some females need "help" to get the hang of things.  Clearing the airways (nose) and bringing the pup to the dam for cleaning.

As long as your female doesn't show signs of distress (excessive panting, moaning) things will progress naturally.

Good luck.
