Question
QUESTION: I have a peekapoo that is in her first heat. We have been keeping her inside but the kids let her out a little big ago and our male dog got ahold of her and they locked up until my hubby got them apart. What are the chances of her being pregnant??????
ANSWER: Hi Leslie --- you have a very, very good chance of having pups.

If your husband "got them apart" you have to be concerned about damage to the male.  A tie is nature's way of keeping them together.

Also depending on the age of your female she may only have a small litter HOWEVER if she not mentally and physically mature or capable of whelping and rearing a litter of pups, you can expect complications.

Good luck.

QUESTION: well, she is only 6 months old! I didnt want her to get pregnant yet because of the chance of something happening! How soon will i be able to look for signs of her being pregnant? If she is, i plan on doing whatever i can to help her and her puppies...even if it is an all night thing! I don't want anything to happen to any of them! But how soon should i see some kind of sign??

Answer
What type of male was it? Same breed?  If it was a large male and your female isn't completely developed, you may want your vet to check to ensure she is able to birth the pups, and discuss c-section options and considerations.

It's not about "an all night thing". It's is about whether or not she is able to birth the pups, if she is capable of rearing pups or if she'll reject them. It's the after whelp care that is just as important.
