Question
I have a 2 yr old chocolate lab (Cocoa). She is pregnant by a Yellow Lab (pure AKC). My question is this - while we had planned on having 1 or 2 MAX litters, I do want to do the responsible stuff for her delivery. Then, what is there to do and expect in the delivery? Because, to be honest - I have no clue. Can you help me prepare for this and what to expect and do in the mean time. She is due in about 3 weeks. Thank you in advance for the help in preparation and the actual birthing process.

Answer
Hi. I will be glad to help. Here are some supplies you'll need: a whelping box, this should be in a draft free, quiet room, out of the way from normal household traffic. Old blanket and towels, I usually get mine from a place like the Goodwill, make sure you buy plenty, you'll want enough for the box and plan on a few in the washer. I like to get some chucks, they're the things that they use in the hospitals, flat diaper like, you can buy them at Wal-Mart in the adult diaper section (get a few bags of these, these are great for when she's actually whelping). Dental floss to tie off umilical cords, get the plain kind. iodine, put on the cord stumps and around the cords on the belly.  bulb syringe to help remove fluids from the mouths and noses after birth. Bottles and formula to have on hand just in case. A notebook to record everything, and a good reading book during whelping, it can take a long time. Plain vanilla icecream for mom during whelping, and can also be used to put a drop on the pups' tongues if they need a pick me up. These are just a few things.

I'm going to give you a really good web site to have a look at. Please look it over, and if you have any more questions, feel free to write.
