Question
My one year old german shepard Lucy, just had a litter of 11 Tuesday morning into Wednesday. This morning we lost one of her pups and now she keeps sitting stepping and laying on them. One almost died about a half an hour ago, I'm not sure what to do. She won't keep them in the box...please help i'm not sure if i should get supplement milk or change their place or what. I don't want to lose another puppy please help me.

Answer
Hi Erica. What you may have to do is to move the puppies and their whelping box to a warm, draft free room with a door. You can allow mom with the pups long enough to nurse them, and to clean them. I would suggest you being there to watch over this. After they are fed and cleaned, take mom out of the room, and close the door. Mom will most likely whine and carry on. Is there a lot of people around the pups, or handling them? If so, put her and the pups in a safe room, and don't let anyone around them. She sounds like she's nervous, that may be why she's trying to move them so much. If this continues on, you may have to take over taking care of the pups until they get a little bit older. It may be the safest thing for the puppies. Try keeping her and her babies isolated and watch them carefully. If that doesn't help any, take over. Your girl is very young, she may not be sure exactly what's she's suppose to do. If I can help with anything else, let me know!
