Question
Hello. I have a female pitbull that will be 5 years old in September of this year.  She is health tested hips/elbows good, and CERF.  She is also in good general health.
Is she too old for a first breeding?  How much higher are the chances for complications at this age?  Thank you.

Answer
Hi. Most breeders say that you shouldn't breed a female dog for the first time after 5. This si because the bones are set and may cause complications. However, there are some breeders that wait to breed for the first time at 5 or 6 with no problems. They wait this long to see if any of the dog's relatives have health problems or temperament problems that shouldn't be passed on. If your girl is in good health and is kept active, then it's really up to you. Just keep in contact with her vet. P.S. Good job on the health tests! :-)
