Question
Hello,
My 18 month old Chorkie(1/2Chihuahua 1/2 Yorkie) Just delivered 1 puppy and that puppy got stuck and had to be extracted at a vet hospital. Unfortunately the puppy died. Background info: The Male dog is also a Chorkie and weighs 5.5 pounds and the female dog weighs 4.5 pounds. The dog went into labor normally with no problems, however when the puppy came out, it was breech and there was NO fluid around the puppy. My question is what is the chance that this would happen again if we bred her? Why was there no  fluid around the pup? And why was there only 1 pup? Any advise would be appreciated!!

Answer
Hi. She was a bit young, that can cause complications. The male was bigger than her, only a pound, but a pound counts in small dogs. I really don't think that was a main reason, but maybe next time you'll want to pick a male that is slightly smaller than she is just to be on the safe side. Breech is a nomal delivery position in dogs. It sounds like the pup was too big to come out on his own. If you breed her again, don't give her puppy food, and make sure she gets plenty of exercise. You may also want to consider x-rays. This will tell you about how many to expect and if there are any really big ones that may cause trouble. It's hard to say for sure if it will happen again or not. It may make her more prone for complications next time. That is why I suggest the x-rays. As for why there was only one puppy, there are a few different reasons why it could happen. Her age, smaller dogs also usually have smaller litters, and she only put out one egg. She may have more if bred again. The thing about a singleton litter is that the puppy has a ton of room to grow and get too big.
