Question

Deformed Chihuahua
I have a friend who has delivered a live Chihuahua puppy with a severe deformity.  It had no eyelids, it's eye's were red and popped out of the puppy's head, it's head was flat, and it had a red spot in the middle of it's forehead.  But the most unusuall thing about this is that 6 months ago, the same thing happened from a completely different set of parents (named Jack and Jill) from differen bloodlines.  Then a few months before that the same momma (Jill) produced a puppy that did not have an eye in the eye socket.  She thought it might be a hereditary factor, but we have kind of ruled that out since it happened to another set of parents.  Do you think that this might be an invironmental factor, and if so, what can she do to prevent this from happening again?
Thanks

Answer
Hi. I don't know if it is genetic or not. Just because the parents aren't related at all, it doesn't meant that they can't still carry a gene for a genetic disorder. What I would do is find the Chi parent club on the interenet and see if this is breed related. They usually have experienced people you can contact. If it's not, then I would take a long look at what's going on in the invornment. Any chemicals being used in the house, on the lawn, or on the dogs? What are the dogs being fed, and vitiamins during pregnany? This is an odd one, I will do some research and see what I can find.
