Question
I am breeding my Schnauzer dog with another persons bitch. I am not wanting a puppy as I want the price of one puppy to buy a bitch of my own. When do you normally ask for payment of the stud fee?

Answer
The agreement between stud & bitch owners should be made prior to breeding & put in writing. I have heard MANY questions regarding this & often the agreement gets confused & someone is left angry & feeling cheated. Since you're the stud owner, I would advise you to place your price for stud services in writing -- generally when the option of preferring a cash equivalent versus pick of the litter is preferred the amount is based on the potential sale of one puppy. However, you & the bitch owner will have to reach an agreement on that. The contract should state all items agreed upon, such as number of matings, what the result will be should the matings not result in a positive pregnancy, etc. The payment to you should also be clear & the timing included. I would advise you to request payment once a positive pregnancy has been confirmed or at least once whelping has occurred. Hope this helps!
