Question
I have a 3 year old female chihuahua who had 3 puppies 7 days ago, I have noticed for the pass couple of days that one of the puppies whines at night while nursing. is this normal? they all seem to be growing o.k. and sleeping fine. I feed my female purina puppy/dog chow the one with different colors and she has 24hr access to her feed bowl. I have also notice that her nipples aren't very big and not alot of milk comes out, but then agian puppies seem to know how to get the milk out. Should I be concerned? Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Sherry

I would recommend any other quality brand of food, but that's just me. You can also include small amounts of organ meat, heart, liver, kidney to her kibble.

If her milk is slow, try taking her out for an hour or two at a time and after a feeding and allowing her milk to reproduce.

If there is a pup that is complaining, that would be a red flag to me.  Try letting it feed by itself, without it's siblings to compete for a teat.  Also check to make sure it's getting milk and not just air.  That will cause trapped gas, which in turn will cause it to whine.

Good luck.
