male not interested in receptive female after one breeding

Question
I have a 3 year old Siberian Husky who has never been bred before. She has always had normal heat cycles. I took her to the stud on day 11 of her cycle and they tied within 5 minutes or so of being together.  Took her back to stud on day 13, she was still very receptive to the male, but he wouldn't mount her.  He would sniff, lick, want to play, but would not mount.  I took her back again on days 15, 16 and 18 as she was still exhibiting signs of being receptive to my neutered male at home.  Same thing happened, the stud just wanted to play with no interest in mounting.  The stud is 1 1/2 years old and has sired 2 litters.  My question is: Could she have already been "done" by day 13 and the male sensed it, or is this a problem with the stud?  I'm not happy with the fact that we only got one tie with this breeding.  My female is now on day 20 of her cycle and is no longer showing any receptivity to my neutered male.

Answer
HI Sandy. An experienced male will usually know when to do his buisness, and when the time has passed. It very well could be that your girl was done on day 13. Some females ovulate early in her cycle. The problem may also be that the stud is very young himself even though he has already sired a couple of litters. 1 1/2 years of age in a large breed dog is still young, and kind of puppyish. It's really hard to tell for sure what happened unless you had done progesterone testing on your dog. The best advice I can give you if you really want to use this dog is to talk to his owner and see if you can have a free return service if this one doesn't take. Good luck!
