dark discharge after birth.

Hi there, my staffordshire bull terrier gave birth around 12 hours ago. I've noticed on the few occasions she has left the whelping box for food, water and urination that she is leaving the odd drop of dark discharge around the house. This discharge looks almost black on the tiled kitchen floor.

She had 7 puppies, all born alive and well, they are all feeding well and mum also seems okay, she's eating and drinking happily when I drag her away from feeding the pups.

I would just like to know if this is normal for a bitch shortly after giving birth.

Hi Chris. This is normal. It will most likely turn to a blood color, and then lighten up over the next few weeks. If she just gave birth 12 hours ago, call the vet and see about getting the 'clean out' shot. This will help make sure she doesn't in there that can cause problems. The vet can then also look her over and make sure that all is going well. Good luck!
