Question
I have a Shi Tzu who is expecting her first liter. What is the best way for us to help her prepare for the delivery.
She was breeded July 15th 2008. Do you know when she should have her pups? Does she need to have a check up with Vet? How many pups should we be expecting?

Answer
Hi Ray. If she was bred on July 15, then she's due on Sept. 15. That's if this was the only time she was bred. She may go a day or so before or after. If she goes past the 17th, take her to the vet. You could take her one day this week for an x-ray to see about how many to expect. I suggest doing this. It will also tell you if there are any really big ones. You need to make her a whelping box. It depends on her size, but you could possible use a plastic storage box for the whelping box. Cut a place in the side of it so she can get in and out. I'm going to give you two links. One is a great page that has pictures of a whelping, and also explains what you need to go to get ready. Thed other one is a links page to some great sites. There are also articles on this site that tells you what you need, what to expect, ect.
