Question
Hi Joyce,

I am a teenager thinking about my future and I was wondering what subjects at school and university do you have to go well in to become a breeder, I love dogs, as does my best friends and we both want to become breeders, but not vets as we don't want to have to cut them open!

Any information is a blessing, it is extremely hard to find any on the net.

Thanks mate,
Charlie

Answer
Hi Charlie

To become a breeder, you don't need anything other than the love of your breed and there is no specific course outline you need.

HOWEVER, I believe that education and experience is a big part of what makes a dedicated stand out.  There are a number of fields you could specialize in for example, training, behavior, holistic practice, the list is endless.

Depending on where you are located would depend on what's available.  Your local AKC or CKC, breed clubs or organizations will offer classes and programs and some offer credits toward your vocation.

We started out as "teenagers" and were lucky to have a mentors that allowed us to learn every aspect of breeding. We started by walking, cleaning kennels and learning about the different breeds, it progressed to University course, animal husbandry and every weekend course we could attend.

Good luck and never quit learning.
