Male yorkie and breeding

Question
I have a 7 almost 8 month old male yorkie. His shots are up to date and clean bill of health from vet. My question is the vet said pups must be 1 year old before they can be studded out. He will be one soon, so I was wondering of anyone could give me the do's and don'ts' of this studding thing. This is the first time for me so any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tara

Answer
Hi Terra

I would contact your local Yorkie club or organization and find out who is looking for a stud.

The most important aspect of breeding is an iron clad contract. Is your male paper? Are you going allow him to produce "designer breeds"? Are you going to guarantee live pups?  How many pups will constitute a litter?  What happens if he's a dud? Are you prepared to give the stud money back? Are you having his DNA and semen tested prior to breeding.  Are you prepared for the responsibility and care of having someone's female at your home for a week or two?  Are you going to ask for cash or pups back? If you get a pup are you certain that the "breeder" will honor the contract? What if you male contracts a STD? The list is endless and sometimes just not worth the aggravation.

Personally, as a breeder, we never stud out. The risks are higher than we are prepared to take.

I hope I didn't blow your mind, but those are things to consider when offering a male for stud.
