Question
Hello. I have a two year old male maltese that loves to bark and chase squirrels all day long outside in the 2 acre yard that we have in the country. When I go to call him back inside the house after I give him some time to relieve outside he looks at me and runs off faster away from home. Inside the house I will call his name to come to me and he looks at me and continues to lay in his bed as if I weren't there at all! I know he is bad on recalls and I have tried the dog whisperer cesar millan methods but it hasn't been working for me. He answers to my husband and my young son and daughter but not very well to me. I was wondering why he does this and is it because he doesn't respect me or think of me as a pack leader?
          Thank You So Very Much.

Answer
Hi Brenda

Sounds like you are low man on his totem pole.

Start with only you feeding him.  When he goes outside, put him on a leash.  In the house tie a leash to your belt loop and drag him around the house with you for a few hours.  When he's not with you he should be in a crate.

He has to learn that everything is earned and he has to look to you as a leader.

Don't let his size fool you.  Little dogs, big ego's.  You have to be tougher than he is and have more patience.  If you can raise reasonable sound children, you can raise one strong minded Maltese.

Set boundaries and stick to them. Trust me a few weeks of this, and he'll do what you ask.

Good luck
