Behavior of just spayed Bichon who has had 2 litters

Question
Hi Cindi!
I have a 6 year old Bichon that has just been spayed 5 days ago.  She has had 2 litters of puppies, the last litter was born 9 months ago. Starting the day following her spay, she has been shivery and whiny when I am not sitting with her.  She does not seem to be in pain, and the surgery site looks really good.  It's almost like she seems to have some notion that she's had puppies and needs to be near them, although she does not go looking for them.  She is happy as long as she is near me.  Have you ever heard or had any experience with this type of behavior after a spay?  Thanks so much.  Amy

Answer
She might be going through some anxiety due to the separation for the surgery and the experience of being in the vet's office. Try giving her some toys with treats stuffed inside to play with when you are not around. Leave something with your scent on it for her as well. A tv turned on where she can see it , oddly enough also sometimes helps. Try not to overdo with condolences and sympathy for her behavior, it only reinforces it. She'll get over it ;)
